Monday, we looked at the dangerous rate of speeding-related fatalities, but DUIs in South Carolina are also dangerously high.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Community Relations Officer Joel Hovis explained that DUIs are one of the “four killers”, the four most common causes of traffic fatalities in the state.
Many programs and organizations have been founded over the years to combat this illegal and completely avoidable form of impaired driving, including the national non-profit Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
“South Carolina, sadly, is one of the nation’s worst and has been for a long, long time,” said Steven Burritt, the Regional Executive Director with Mother’s Against Drunk Driving for both of the Carolinas. “Added to that pain, unfortunately, is the newest numbers that just came out last week for 2021 show that we actually had a 26 percent increase in our drunk driving fatalities.”
Both Burritt and Hovis recommend those who plan to drunk to make plans for a designated driver, an uber, or something similar so as to NEVER get behind the wheel while impaired.
