Spartanburg County looks to get penny sales tax increase on ballot

Sburg
Spartanburg County

One Upstate County is working to implement a penny sales tax that would fund road improvements. Officials in Spartanburg County want to add a 1% increase on the ballot in November.

The County Council there is reportedly by majority in favor of adding the increase. The new tax if adopted, would mark the 2nd such increase in the last 6 years. The initial penny sales tax was approved by voters in 2017 and was used to fund the Spartanburg County Courthouse improvement project.

Officials say, this increase would be used exclusively to fix the roads. Unprepared foods at grocery stores and medications will be exempt from the new tax. Plans for the 1% increase have to be finalized by August 15th to be on the November ballot.
