It was the highly anticipated, great debate on the Charlie James Show, Thursday afternoon. The two candidates vying for the Republican nomination in the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office race faced off.
Rusty Clevenger and Bill Rhyne will face off and the winner will have an inside track. They both fielded various questions including why they are running now instead of in the last election.
Clevenger who serves as Coroner in Spartanburg County, said that he felt like former Sheriff Chuck Wright was extremely popular and up until about a year ago, there wasn't any sign of wrong doing in the Sheriff's Office.
Rhyne who is a veteran law enforcement officer who has worked with the South Carolina Highway Patrol had a completely different answer. He said he had planned to run for Sheriff in 2028.
Rhyne said when he went back to the Highway Patrol he had committed to being there at least two years. A term that is now up and when the opportunity rose, he felt like this was the right time.
The two will meet next Tuesday, August 19th in the runoff.
