A suspect is in custody after authorities say he stole a patrol vehicle over the weekend and led deputies on a chase across the Upstate.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of someone having a mental health episode at the Quik Trip on Asheville Highway around 9PM, Saturday.
About 45 minutes later, the suspect William Waters was able to get in a deputy's patrol vehicle and drove away. As deputies tried stopping him, one was hit by the driver's door and was dragged briefly. That deputy was not injured.
Waters then led deputies on a chase through Spartanburg, Laurens and Newberry Counties. He was eventually stopped on I-26 near mile marker 60. A deputy was involved in crash during the chase on I-26.
He was injured and was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional. The deputy is expected to make a full recovery.
Waters was taken into custody. He's charged with grand larceny, DUI and failure to stop for blue lights.
