The TD Saturday Market is returning for its 21st installment this year.
Founded in 2003, the weekly farmers market features various local farmers and crafts venders Saturday mornings from 8am to noon from now through October.
“The city has continued to add market vendors to compliment this event. This year’s market will feature 10 new vendors, for a record of 85 vendors including our six series sponsors over the course of this season,” said Rachel Pitman, the Saturday Market Coordinator, speaking at a press conference Tuesday to introduce this year’s season.
Mayor Knox White also spoke at the press conference, explaining the history of this now staple annual event.
“This was an event that for many, many, many years – in fact I could almost say two decades – we were told we couldn’t do this,” Mayor White said. He explained this was due to another market already existing in the area that sponsors would have been needed to get the event off the ground.
“We didn’t even know if people would accept it. We couldn’t even find a location for a long time,” he continued. “From the beginning, TD Bank shared our vision of a Saturday farmer’s market that’d be a food market – a little bit of crafts, a little bit of this and that – but the primary focus would indeed be on the farmers.”
