Two family members of an Upstate child are facing charges after the two year old died at an area hospital. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office responded around 830 Monday night to Hillcrest Hospital after a child was brought in.
An investigation revealed that the two year old had suffered a gunshot wound at a home in Simpsonville. The child died at the hospital from their injuries.
The investigation is still ongoing, however the child's mother 32 year old, Deylakota Simon Burgess and her stepfather Willie Tyron Burgess Jr. have been arrested for unlawfully placing the child at risk.
Investigators believe the child got the gun from inside the home and the gunshot wound was self inflicted. Both suspects were believed to be home when the incident occurred.
