Upstate man charged in catastrophic crash in North Carolina

An Upstate man has been charged after a crash on a North Carolina highway involving over 50 vehicles left one person dead and others injured.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded on Wednesday to the area of I-40 in Orange County about 20 miles northwest of Durham. A crash there caused a chain reaction pile up of 53 cars including several tractor-trailers.


One person was killed in the crash, she's been identified as 78 year old Jerolyn Day Wilson of Burlington, North Carolina. A tractor-trailer driver 44 year old, William Kellam of Spartanburg was arrested following the wreck.

Kellam is charged with death by vehicle and going to fast for conditions. Troopers say winter weather in the area Wednesday, played a major factor in the catastrophic collision.
