An Upstate man is in custody, as he stands accused of killing his step-father. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of Portrush Drive in Spartanburg around 4AM, Saturday. Upon arrival, deputies found a man unresponsive. The man appeared to have been assaulted and was taken to Spartanburg Regional where he later died.
The victim has been identified as 55 year old, Willie E. Beam. Deputies say his step-son Monteiro Merriweather was found at the scene. He originally told them that Beam had been assaulted at a home in Shelby, North Carolina. The two then drove back to Spartanburg and Beam became unresponsive.
However, Investigators say Merriweather admitted that he and Beam had been fighting with each other. Merriweather is charged with murder and is being held in Spartanburg County.
