Robert Hoefer Jr., an upstate vocal coach and creator of the local BBQ seasoning brand “Carolina Bob’s suffered from a heart attack and two strokes two years ago brought upon by common southern dietary choices.
After going through Prisma Health’s HeartLife rehabilitation program, he has recently expanded his local BBQ seasoning lineup for those, such as himself, that want or need to watch their salt and gluten intake to improve their nutritional health.
“I was given the epiphany that, ‘Robert take all the bad stuff out like the salt and gluten and relaunch your program’,” Hoefer said. “And I was given the insight of what seasonings go together, and they worked, and the accolades were just phenomenal. And now we have the product in several locations here in the Upstate.”

Prisma’s Dr. Andrea Bryan, the medical director of HeartLife, said that high salt and transient fat consumption is a notable factor that has led to the south’s higher rate of heart-centric health problems compared to the rest of the country.
“Per the CDC, about 800,000 people have a heart attack yearly,” Bryan said. “And unfortunately, because of our geographical location, we have sort of an unhealthier lifestyle than other areas of the United States, and so we’re a little heavier with our cardiac events in the southeast.
Hoefer said this seasoning, as well as the rest of his Carolina Bob’s seasoning line are available in the Upstate at Food Lion and Cooking Station.
