An Upstate native is shipping out on the US navy's newest amphibious warship.
Piedmont native Caroline Anascavage is serving as a culinary specialist aboard the USS Fort Lauderdale, the navy's newest warship.
Commissioned at the end of July, the warship is an amphibious transport dock ship stationed in Norfolk Virginia, used to transport and land marines, their equipment and supplies through various means.
Graduating from Woodmont High School in 2020, Anascavage joined the navy one year ago, saying "I joined the Navy to start my own life. I wanted to make my own plans for my career."
Anascavage was previously assigned temporarily to the USS Arlington, where she earned a letter of appreciation while learning and gaining additional experience for her job.
"I'd like to thank my mom for how proud she is of my service," Anascavage said. "She's the reason I'm motivated to serve and do my best."
Captain James Quaresimo, the ship's commanding officer, commended the service and dedication of Anascavage and her fellow service members in a press release.
