An Upstate school is district is under fire for their handling or in the eyes of many mishandling of plans for graduation ceremonies this weekend. The School District Of Oconee County (SDOC) is facing heavy criticism as they are limiting the number of family and friends who can attend graduation due to limited space.
In past years, the SDOC rented larger indoor venues to hold graduation ceremonies. In recent years they stopped doing that and hold graduation ceremonies at the football stadium of the respective school. With rain moving in, those plans have been scrapped and the ceremonies have been moved indoors.
That decision comes with hard limits on the number of attendees. Each graduate is allotted a certain number of tickets. Multiple sources have told me that in some cases, people are scalping and selling their allotted tickets. Which has come with criticism from many people around the county.
The majority of property tax revenue in Oconee County goes to fund the SDOC. Oconee County has a higher average property tax rate than Pickens, Laurens, Union and Cherokee Counties and many others across the state.
