The US Supreme Court Friday morning released a ruling that overturns the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling, giving individual states the right to pass their own abortion laws.
Several Upstate legislators posted responses to the decision on social media, praising the Supreme Court’s overturning of the previous ruling.
Following the decision, Lindsey Graham released a statement on social media saying the decision is "a long overdue constitutional correction".
In response to the decision, Congressman William Timmons said he applauds the Supreme Court for their "historic ruling".
Representative Jeff Duncan released a statement calling the decision of the “most significant civil rights victories in our nation’s history”.
In a statement Friday afternoon, Senator Tim Scott also praised the Supreme Court decision, calling it "an important step to protect the God-given right to life for millions of Americans".
Governor Henry McMaster also responded on twitter as well, saying motions are being filed to push the Fetal Heartbeat Act into effect in the state.
SC GOP Chairman Drew McKissick also released a statement following the decision, calling it a "victory for life everywhere."
In his full statement, McKissick said, "The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a victory for life everywhere. The pro-life movement has been working for decades to educate and motivate folks to stand for the unborn, and we'll continue to do just that in this new life after Roe. Today is further proof that elections have consequences. Who we elect as President matters because judicial nominations matter. And today, the highest court in the land ruled that life in the womb matters."
