An Upstate woman was taken for nearly $15,000 in a reported cyber security scam. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says a 72 year old woman reported Monday that she had been scammed.
The woman said a warning popped up on her Ipad screen that said spyware had been installed on her device. The notification included a phone number to call.
The woman called , she was told that someone had hacked her account and was trying to withdraw nearly 15 grand from her bank account. The woman was then referred to an alleged Wells Fargo agent, who told her she needed to encrypt her account.
The woman told investigators she withdrew well over $14,000 from her checking account and deposited it into a bitcoin ATM.
She took the receipt to a vape store in Spartanburg, after she was told to go there and present the receipt. The woman then realized she had been scammed, but the damage had already been done
