A North Carolina war hero killed in combat has now been honored nearly 60 years after his death. Last Thursday, President Joe Biden awarded Army Captain Hugh Nelson Jr. with the Medal Of Honor due to his service in Vietnam.
U.S. Senator from North Carolina Thom Tillis worked with Nelson's family to request that he be awarded the Medal Of Honor, posthumously. Captain Nelson was a native of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1966.
During the attack Nelson saved three members of his helicopter flight crew and used his own body to shield another soldier, saving his life. Senator Thillis referred to Captain Nelson as a "True American Hero".
