A vigil was held in the Upstate over the weekend for a child who died last week after a long battle with various health issues. In 2015, an 18 month girl was physically abused by her father so badly that she suffered serious injuries and went into a coma.
The abuse left the child a quadriplegic, non-verbal and feeding tube dependent until her death last week. The father Joseph Morales was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison and is expected to be released in 2030.
After the child known as Egypt died, police did pursue murder charges against the father. However, state law says that a suspect can't be charged with murder if the person died from injuries suffered more than 3 years after the incident.
