A Sheriff in Western North Carolina has been arrested on sex crime charges. Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran is accused of sexual battery, assaulting a woman, sexual abuse, solicitation to commit prostitution and other crimes.
The charges stem from an incident this past Sunday in which a woman filed a report against Cochran with the Cherokee Indian Police Department. The woman told police she was sexually assaulted by Cochran. State and federal officials are also investigating the incident.
The officer that stopped Cochran's vehicle Sunday says the woman with him was trembling and emotional. Cochran was taken into custody, Friday.
He has been suspended from office and is set to appear in court next month regarding his continued employment as Sheriff.
