
Transgender athletes competing in female sports has been a controversial topic around the country throughout this year. That debate has now come close to home, after an issue with a transgender athlete at a high school in Western North Carolina. Controversy now surrounds the volleyball program at Highlands School in Macon County, which has a transgender athlete competing in girls volleyball. A female athlete from Hiwassee Dam High School, a conference mate with Highlands was injured when the transgender player spike a ball into her face, earlier this season. The Cherokee County School Board then voted 5-1 to forfeit all future matches against Highlands, for girls volleyball programs in their district. Hiwassee Dam's Athletic Director supported the move saying at the School Board meting, a statement needed to be made and competing against the transgender athlete was both unfair and unsafe. This comes just after Lia Thomas, a biological male won the NCAA Women's National Title in Swimming. Also, earlier this year President Biden proposed changes to Title IX that would protect the rights of trans-athletes to compete in women sports. Will this be the end of Women's sports?
