A Western North Carolina residential therapy school that has now closed is facing heavy fines from the State Department of Health and Human Services. Asheville Academy closed its Weaverville Campus and released all of the students there, earlier this year.
That came after two students took their own lives at the school within a few weeks of each other. After the 1st student was reported dead, the state health agency found code violations on campus.
They have levied fines of more than $40,000 against the owners of the school. Asheville Academy will have 30 days to appeal.
