On Sunday, August 4, 2024, Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that South Carolina's law against price gouging is in effect. The law prohibits unconscionable "rent or sell" prices during times of disaster.
The announcement comes on the heels of Governor McMaster's declaration of a state of emergency for Debby. "The law remains in effect until the declaration expires or is terminated."
"Anyone found to have violated the state’s price gouging law is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be punished by a fine of up to $1,000, up to 30 days in jail, or both."
