Once-prominent Lowcountry lawyer Alex Murdaugh is back in jail after he was denied bond at Wednesday morning's hearing in Colleton County. He's charged with murdering his wife and younger son last year.
In shackles and handcuffs Murdaugh spoke only once at the hearing, rising from his seat at the defense table to deny any part in the killings. His own defense team asked the judge to deny bond, saying they will press for the earliest possible trial date.
Murdaugh believes the real killer is still at large. Lawyer Dick Harpootlian also told the court he and co-defender Jim Griffn will seek disclosure of whatever evidence or information SLED agents used to link Murdaugh to the murders. Harpootlian added that prosecutors have worked --in his words - "since day one to convince all concerned that Alex Murdaugh is guilty."
If Murdaugh is convicted the sentence could range from thirty years to life. The state also has the option to demand the death penalty in multiple murder cases .
