A new bat species has been discovered in South Carolina, bringing the total bat species recorded in the state to 15.
The gray bat has been found just across the South Carolina border in North Carolina and Georgia in the past, but the species was recently found by SCDNR scientific staff roosting in a crevice under a bridge in Greenville County.

SCDNR state bat biologist Jennifer Kindel explained that studying the species has been difficult in the state despite its up-to-now extremely close proximity.
“Without a record of this species in the state, it was difficult for biologists to obtain funding for systematic surveys, but now we hope to learn more,” Kindel said in a press release.
Only a week after the first discovery in mid-August, another roosting of bats was found in Oconee County. A total of four gray bats were found in the second location.

The gray bat is listed on a federal list of endangered species and has made good strides in avoiding extinction since being placed on that list.
However, it is still endangered due to very few large gatherings of the species in only a few caves.
