The Department of Public Safety has released preliminary numbers of traffic fatalities across the state of South Carolina.
The numbers compare January 1st through August 17th over the past few years, with a notably decrease reported this year.
2022 reported the highest number of fatalities at 673 across the state, with each subsequent year seeing a decrease to 661 in 2023, 644 in 2024, and now a massive decrease to 521 fatalities this year.
Spartanburg, Horry and Charleston Counties led in fatalities by a significant margin each year, with Greenville County ranking the deadliest state until this year, which reported less than half the fatalities seen on average in previous years.
