State AG asking for Mexican drug cartels to be considered foreign terrorists

With America's Southern Border being unsecure and a crisis ongoing, high ranking federal officials are being asked to step up efforts to stop Mexican drug cartels. While the plea is a national one, it has implications here in the Palmetto State.

State AG Alan Wilson joined a coalition of 21 states calling on President Biden to designate those cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, under federal law. In 2022, over 100,000 American died from overdoses.

The problem has also surfaced here in the Upstate, with fentanyl overdoses reaching record highs, last year. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized over 8,000 pounds of fentanyl being smuggled in , from the fall of 2021 through the summer of 2022.

Wilson said " "The drugs in South Carolina are often coming directly from Mexican drug cartels. These cartels are knowingly killing people with their poison and the violence used to protect their business. It's past time they're officially considered a terrorist organization and treated as such".
