Several South Carolina elected officials responded to the weekend death of former US President Jimmy Carter.

In a statement on Instagram, Gov McMaster noted his years of service to his country in the Navy, the state senate, the governor's office, the White House and as a humanitarian, but that it was in the face of illness, and ultimately death, that President Carter taught us the most.

His faith in God and love of Rosalynn remained the foundation of his life and example for each of us about what matters the most.

Sen Lindsey Graham in a Facebook post said "President Carter lived a full, incredible and consequential life. He will be remembered for his decency and his humanitarian efforts as much as any legislative accomplishment."

In a media release Sen Tim Scott said "President Carter's public witness of his faith was a blessing to his family, the church, and our country. His legacy as a Sunday school teacher, faithful husband to his bride, and a man of deep Christian conviction in private and in public service will inspire Americans for generations to come. May his memory be a blessing to his family and our nation."
