COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina officially launched its Zero Tolerance for Litter Month today with a press event on the State House steps, led by Lt. Governor Pamela Evette, SCDNR Director Thomas Mullikin, and state and local partners committed to cleaner communities.
The campaign, a joint initiative by PalmettoPride and the South Carolina Litter Control Association, is timed with the summer travel season and National Secure Your Load Day (June 6). An estimated 20% of roadside litter comes from unsecured loads, highlighting the need for public education and stricter enforcement.
Director Mullikin delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between agencies, communities, and law enforcement to reduce litter across the state.
“Litter prevention is not just an environmental issue—it’s a public safety and economic priority," said Director Mullikin.
Throughout June, state and local law enforcement will increase enforcement of litter laws while also engaging the public in awareness and prevention efforts.
Speakers at the event also included representatives from the SC Department of Public Safety, SC Department of Transportation, SC Sheriffs’ Association, SC Litter Control Association, and PalmettoPride.
