Billy Idol has seen some things. From his Punk beginnings, to Pop success, and a lifetime of stories along the way. But he's also seen the way that conversations on mental health have evolved since the 70s, thankfully more open and honest today than ever before.
LISTEN NOW: Billy Idol on the Evolution of Mental Health Conversations
"Well, of course people understand a lot more, that a lot of people are struggling with, sort of mental health, and everything," Idol told Audacy's Race Taylor during a recent conversation. "I think we were very aware of it back in the 70s and stuff, but there again, people just didn't know quite how to deal with it."
"It's taken time to understand, you know, the doctors and everybody to really get a grip on how much it affects so many people, because even I didn't realize just how much it affects so many people. But over the years I've come to realize just what a struggle it is for some people, how mental health and physical health, work in tandem. And now the ability to talk about it openly, maybe without the stigma or the criticism, it's great because people should try and understand that because we're not all exactly the same, so you need to have some empathy."
It’s okay to not be OK. We know the power of talk can save lives. Audacy's I’m Listening aims to share valuable resources for those who need to connect, heal, and share their own stories. To those who are dealing with mental health issues, understand you are not alone. If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression or anxiety, know that someone is always there.
