Wearing a mask in public has become the norm, as people look to protect themselves and others from the coronavirus. However, while most are now on board with wearing a mask in public, masks have apparently now created an entire new set of problems. Now that dentist offices are reopening, many are reporting serious hygiene issues; they are referring to as “mask mouth.”
While wearing a mask may help prevent someone from catching the coronavirus, now a new set of problems have emerged for people to deal with because of the mask. According to dentists, wearing a mask can lead to decaying teeth, receding gum lines and bad breath. “We’re seeing inflammation in people’s gums that have been healthy forever, and cavities in people who have never had them before,” said Dr. Rob Ramondi.
With a number of people still not pleased with wearing a mask, “mask mouth” now gives them yet another reason to not want to cover up. Some ways people can prevent “mask mouth” include; drinking more water, cutting down on caffeine, using a humidifier, using mouthwash, scraping the tongue when brushing teeth, and quit smoking. Hopefully “mask mouth” doesn’t become a major issue, because no one wants to deal with bad breath.
