It seems just about every aspect of life now has a screen incorporated in some form. Whether it’s a television, a gadget or even the phones that people remain attached to throughout the day, screens are difficult to avoid while performing everyday tasks. While the average amount of time people are looking at screens is already alarming, a new study has revealed that number has dramatically increased during quarantine.
Pre-quarantine, people averaged 17 hours a day of screen time, but according to new research, that number is now up to over 19 hours day. While that number seems alarming, Benjamin Dumaine, an optician and head of business development for Vision Direct said, “We’re lucky to have devices that connect us with the outside world. A similar pandemic taking place 30 or 40 years ago would have been people coping with the lack of contact in very different ways."
According to the study, done by Vision Direct, the average U.S. adult will spend 44 years looking at a screen. Smartphones are the leading cause of that number at an average use of over four and a half hours a day. While it seems people should try to lower this number, what else is there to do during quarantine?
