Dallas appears ready to ban the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores.
Supporters say many animals sold in pet stores come from inhumane puppy mills and the change would create humane pet stores.
Lauren Loney, Texas State director for the Human Society, says Petland is the only store in Dallas that continues to sell puppies and kittens.
"We know through public documentation that Dallas Petland was supplied with at least 40 puppies in the last two years from an unregulated and unlicensed puppy mill facility in Missouri who's owner is currently facing animal cruelty charges" says Loney.
But vice president of Petland Elizabeth Kouzeman says their stores are being unfairly targeted.
"Petland Dallas only buys from USDA and state licenses breeders who have had no violations in the past two years and who have a veteranian documented socialization and exercise program" says Kouzeman. "These breeders go far above and beyond the minimum standards."
A committee voted to support the ban however the full city council will vote on the issue next month.
