DENTON (1080 KRLD) - A lemur seen swinging through the treetops in Denton is no longer on the loose.
Sarah Adams was in her backyard with her family in the Southridge neighborhood of Denton when she spotted the strange black-and-white creature sitting on her fence. This happened back in June. It was the first time her family spotted the strange little critter, but not the last.
"At first since it's black and white, we were like 'Oh, it's a raccoon probably," Adams said. "Then it started to walk and we were like … 'Oh. It's not a raccoon.'"
Adams was right. It wasn't a raccoon-- it was a Ring-Tailed lemur. She whipped out a camera and managed to take a quick video of the creature before ushering her family inside and calling animal control.
"They were just as befuddled as we were," Adams said, laughing. "But apparently they've had calls before about a Ring-Tailed lemur. From my understanding, there is a vet in our neighborhood who owns this lemur."
Lemurs are native to Madagascar. You can legally own one in Texas, however, a Denton city ordinance classifies them as primates, which are not allowed locally.
By the time animal control arrived at Adams' house, the lemur was gone. Adams says over the past month, she and her family have spotted the little guy up in the trees quite a few times. That is, until recently. City officials say the lemur has been captured and returned to its owner.
Adams posted the video she took of the lemur on social media, and it's gotten quite a few responses. An excerpt of the video was posted by a different twitter user and got nearly 2 thousand likes.
"Everyone was very surprised and curious as to why there was a lemur," Adams said. "But this is Denton. You never know what's going to be in your backyard."
