Now while this instance wasn’t necessarily controversial, Jennings nonetheless apologized for throwing out a ‘dad joke’ during game play this week, reported Fox News.

It all went down after contestant Andrew He chose the category “National Geographic Ocean: A Global Odyssey” for $800 during the Double Jeopardy round, per the outlet. The clue read: “A very brave cleaner shrimp gets a meal of parasites and dead skin from the mouth of one of these scary predators.”

Contestant Jeff Meyers chimed in first with the answer, “What is an eel?” Jennings asked him to be more specific, to which Meyers incorrectly replied, “electric eel.” After none of the contestants buzzed in with the right answer, Jennings attempted a bit of humorous wordplay on the correct answer of moray eel.

"As Dean Martin might’ve said, ‘That’s Amore,’” Jennings quipped in reference to the Rat Pack member's 1953 hit song.

Afterwards, the official “Jeopardy!” Twitter account shared a GIF of Jennings with the caption, “Dad joke alert!”

Realizing his commentary didn’t go as well as he had hoped, Jennings retweeted the GIF and begged his fans for forgiveness. “I will be coming to your homes individually to apologize for this,” Jennings wrote in the caption.

Jennings and Bialik will be trading hosting duties throughout the year while producers search for a permanent host.

“Jeopardy!” has been besieged with controversy after former executive producer Mike Richards was initially picked to take over the job but had to be quickly removed after derogatory comments he made on a 2014 podcast resurfaced.

Jennings rose to fame after appearing as a contestant in 2004 and enduring a 74-game victory streak worth more than $2.5 million.
