“Whenever I think about being in a band that’s kind of doing well, I am honestly shocked,” Babcock said after Morgan asked him what it was like being a part of the greatest band in the world. “I think most bands start off with no expectations and it’s still a bit surprising for me whenever anyone is like, ‘hey I like PUP.’”
The band’s success has given them the liberty to pursue any creative venture they want to. Most importantly, their team behind them gives them the green light. “We’ve been lucky enough to have a team around us for the past couple years that trusts us and believes whatever insane bulls*** we come up with might work and are willing to get behind it,” Babcock says.
Freed also asked Babcock whether or not his recent marriage will impact his lyrics in the future. Babcock gave an interesting answer that provides a pretty clear glimpse inside his songwriting process. “I’m not sure who said it, but I remember an artist one time summed it up perfectly where it’s like, your first heartbreak will provide material for you for the rest of your life,” he says. “The first time you fall in love or the first time you get your heart truly broken, it feels like you’re the first person to ever experience that emotion.”
“It’s a weird thing because a lot of the negative stuff in my songs are sometimes about my partner,” Babcock adds. “If we have a disagreement, there might be this microcosm of I hate this at this moment. Maybe that emotion can make its way into a song.”
Emo Nite is not a band, and they’re not your usual DJs – Host Morgan Freed throws epic parties and now has a radio show for the music they love. Listen Sundays from 7PM - 8PM on your favorite Audacy Alternative stations.
