The Padres missed out on a chance to sweep the 1st place Athletics, losing on Sunday afternoon 5-2 in the series finale. Michael King couldn't find his command, as he allowed four earned runs on five hits and four free passes in just 3.2 innings of work. King allowed a leadoff home run to Carlos Cortes, then two more runs in the second inning, before really getting into a jam in the fourth inning. After Jonah Heim's leadoff double, Zack Gelof struck out before King walked Jeff McNeil and Henry Bolte to load the bases with one out. King then struck out Alika Williams for the second out of the inning, before throwing a wild pitch and allowing Heim to score from third base for the game's fourth run. After walking Cortes to re-load the bases with Nick Kurtz stepping to the plate, Craig Stammen pulled the plug and brought in Ron Marinaccio, who struck out Kurtz to strand the bases loaded. The Padres were able to cut the deficit in half on an RBI-flyout by Manny Machado and a solo home run from Ty France in the bottom of the 7th inning, but that was as close as the Padres would get, as the Athletics added an insurance run in the 9th inning and held on to win 5-2. The Phillies now arrive in San Diego for a series beginning on Memorial Day.
