The Padres bounced back from Friday night's loss to the Astros with a 3-2 win behind a strong pitching effort from Michael King. It was the type of outing that this staff has been lacking in recent months, as King efficiently navigated 6 innings while allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 6 hitters. Jackson Merrill broke a 1-1 tie with a solo blast to straight away center field in the 3rd inning, driving in his second run of the game. The Padres scored another run in the 4th thanks to some shoddy defense from the Astros. Mason Miller had an uncharacteristic outing in the 9th inning while protecting a 2-run lead. The All-Star closer hit Christian Walker to begin the inning, and then allowed Walker to advance to second base on a wild pitch. After retiring the next two batters he faced, Yainer Diaz drove in Walker with a single on an 0-2 count to extend the game and bring the Astros to within a run of the Padres. But Miller would go on to get pinch-hitter Lamont Wade Jr. to ground out to Manny Machado to end the game. The Padres will have a chance to win the series with a victory on Sunday.
