Randy Vasquez made a bid to rejoin the Padres' starting rotation on Tuesday night, hurling six scoreless innings in the Padres' 9-4 win over the the Diamondbacks, who they are directly competing with for a wild card spot. It was Vasquez's first start since allowing 4 runs in 3 innings against the Dodgers on July 2nd. The Padres scored three runs in the 1st inning and three more in the 2nd inning, providing a cushion for Vasquez and the bullpen. The Padres' offense exploded for 16 hits and scored 9 runs in total without hitting any home runs. The D'backs hit two 2-run homers off of German Marquez in the 7th inning to get within four runs of the lead, but that was as close as the Diamondbacks got. Jake Cronenworth added an RBI-single in the 9th inning, and Griffin Canning pitched a scoreless 9th inning on just 7 pitches, preserving the team's highest leverage arms, thanks to contributions out of the bullpen from former starters Marquez and Canning. Casey Mize is set to make his Padres debut on Wednesday night in the third game against Arizona.
