The Padres lost a hard-fought game against the Brewers on Wednesday, as Milwaukee starter Dustin May flummoxed San Diego's bats for the second time this season. After pitching a complete game shutout in June while still with the Cardinals, May pitched into the 8th inning, allowing just one run on a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts. But things turned for the Padres in the 8th inning. May walked Gavin Sheets to lead off the inning, and was then lifted with the tying run on base. After Xander Bogaerts grounded into a double play, Fernando Tatis Jr. pinch-hit for Freddy Fermin, and drew a walk. During what turned out to be a 9-pitch at-bat by Luis Rengifo, Tatis Jr. stole 2nd base, and Rengifo drew a walk, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs for Jake Cronenworth. On the 9th pitch of Cronenworth's at-bat, he hit a soft chopper to 1st base and hustled down the line, beating pitcher Aaron Ashby by a split-second, thus allowing Tatis Jr. to score from 2nd base and tie the game at 2. After the two teams failed to score in the 10th inning, Gary Sanchez drove in a run in the top of the 11th to give the Brewers a 3-2 lead. The lead runner Jake Cronenworth advanced to third base on Manny Machado's grounder to shortstop to begin the bottom of the 11th inning. Try France was then hit by a pitch, and pinch run for by Sung-Mun Song. Jackson Merill then blasted a line drive to right field that Luis Lara made an outrageous leaping catch on to save the game, holding Song at first base despite the tying run scoring from third. Song then stole second base with two outs, and Luis Campusano drove him in with a single to right field to complete the sweep of the 1st place Brewers. The Padres will certainly have a pleasant flight to Cleveland and enjoy their day off on Thursday before facing the Guardians on Friday.
