Before the Padres' next wave of contributors reached San Diego, they were making an impact with Triple-A El Paso. On the Braden Surprenant Show, El Paso Chihuahuas manager Pete Zamora discussed the organization's player development philosophy and provided insight into several young players who have recently energized the big league club.
Zamora explained that while winning games in Triple-A matters, the top priority is preparing players to help the Padres. He credited the organization’s leadership and scouting staff for identifying talented players and, just as importantly, bringing in the right people to fit the culture.
The Chihuahuas skipper had high praise for utilityman Samad Taylor, revealing that he pushed for the organization to sign Taylor after watching him dominate against El Paso while he was with Seattle. Zamora called Taylor a natural leader who immediately became a clubhouse presence and praised his confidence, versatility, and ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
Zamora also discussed slugger Jase Bowen, describing his combination of power, athleticism, and work ethic as rare. While acknowledging there is still development ahead, Zamora said Bowen possesses tools that can change a game and believes there is much more to come.
He also highlighted infielder Will Wagner, calling him a “pro’s pro” whose preparation and baseball pedigree have helped him quickly make an impression after returning from injury.
On the pitching side, Zamora said Johnny Brito looks healthy and stronger than ever in his return from injury, while veteran Germán Márquez has shown encouraging signs during his rehab assignment.
Zamora also praised left-hander JP Sears for his competitiveness and leadership, saying the organization remains confident in the former Mason Miller trade acquisition despite the challenges of pitching in the Pacific Coast League.
Throughout the interview, Zamora emphasized that the Padres' talent pipeline extends beyond prospect rankings, pointing to the work of President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller and the scouting department in continually uncovering players capable of contributing in San Diego.
