Just as we all thought coming into the season, a ranked Boston College team will head down to Missouri to take on the Tigers in a huge Week 3 showdown in college football. As shocking as this ranked matchup is, the spread is much more what you would expect, with Missouri being a massive -16.5 favorite at most places in the market. The total is 54.5 pretty much everywhere as well, and with early odds movement, money is clearly flowing toward the Tigers and the under.
The Eagles were not supposed to be ranked coming into this game, and I doubt anyone would have seen that coming before Week 1. This was a team that many didn’t even think would make a bowl game, as their win total was set at 5.5 juiced to the under before the year. They had other plans however, starting out 2-0 with a huge win over what we now know was a very overrated Florida State team.
However, Missouri hasn’t fumbled their season away like the Seminoles or Fighting Irish in the early going, and should be a huge challenge for this team. If they manage to win again, we can start talking about just how serious of a contender they are. Until then, the market here seems set accordingly.
As mentioned, the Tigers have managed to get out to an easy 2-0 start thanks to cupcake matchups against Murray State and Buffalo. However, they also took care of business and didn’t get caught in the trap like Notre Dame did against a far inferior team, so credit has to go to them for that. They were the far better team and played like it, posting back-to-back shutouts.
While it is quite shocking that Boston College is ranked, Missouri also can’t just walk into this matchup and think it will be easy. I am sure that the Seminoles did that, thinking it would be an easy win to get their season back on track, and they blew it. The Tigers have to take this team seriously and bring their best, as they can’t rely on talent alone like FSU thought they could.
When it comes to betting this game, I will be very interested to see where the tickets and money are going. Which of these teams will be the public favorite? Normally, the Tigers would be getting all the bets here, but that isn’t for certain. Teams like BC can become a quick public ticket after upset wins.
My initial lean would be to take Missouri and the under, as I find it hard to think the Eagles will be putting up tons of points against this SEC defense playing at home. Still, I’ll be waiting for the betting splits later in the week before I fire away on this game.
