What if I told you that there was a player who quietly racked up 104 steals in 110 minor league games last season and 93 steals in 115 minor games the year before that you can now get at +4000 to lead the MLB in stolen bases this season?
Well, that would be Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson, who has already been turning heads in this Spring Training. The big question will be is if he can hit against Major League pitching, but he slashed .355/.410/.397 in A+ and AA last year and has the type of 80-grade speed to beat anything out if he gets the ball in play.
He also rarely has struck out at the minor league level (93% contact rate) and swings and misses a very low percentage of the time.
Not only that, but he can routinely turn a ground ball into a single.
Not only that, but that speed also makes him an asset defensively, as he showed multiple times this spring already.
Elly De La Cruz is a heavy -145 favorite to lead the league in steals after registering 67 swipes last year, but I think you can do a lot worse than by sprinkling Simpson, even if he makes his debut a few weeks into the season.
