We’ve finally rounded the corner to Super Bowl Week and we are almost there, folks.
In the lead up to the Big Game, our staff has found our best bets on who will win Super Bowl MVP right here just for you!
Dan Karpuc: Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie (+25000)
There are a few factors contributing to this longshot pick. First, I think the Chiefs are going to win and complete the three-peat. Thus, the MVP will almost assuredly come from their team if that happens. Second, there might be some voter fatigue for Patrick Mahomes, who won the award in all three of his previous championships. Plus, we’re not used to seeing the more human numbers Mahomes has put up all season. Third, KC’s defense has been elite against the run and will likely prioritize limiting Saquon Barkley, attempting to force Jalen Hurts to throw the ball more than usual. Given Steve Spagnuolo’s blitz-heavy approach, McDuffie will likely be tasked with one-on-one coverage against A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but will have opportunities to make plays on the football. This has 0.40% implied odds of hitting and he will likely need two interceptions to win it if the Chiefs are victorious (Jake Scott, Larry Brown and Dexter Jackson were the only members of the secondary to win MVP and they all had two picks), but I’m happy to take a shot on one of the league’s top young stars.
Lucy Burdge: Patrick Mahomes (+105)
I’m not going to overthink this one, just like I’m doing with picking the winner of this game. I’m taking the Chiefs to win and with a Kansas City win, I think Mahomes will be the MVP. He already has three Super Bowl MVP wins and with this win he’ll be one step closer to Tom Brady’s five MVP wins. So I’m going with Mahomes here to win the award.
Kate Constable: Travis Kelce (+1500)
It’s going to take a massive game from Kelce to win this award, but there is certainly a path to that happening. Kelce has shown out in the postseason and as Patrick Mahomes' security blanket, he’s bound to make a few game-changing plays. If Kelce has 100 yards and a score or two, there is reason to give him the award, especially if the rest of Mahomes numbers are fairly underwhelming. Plus, with this potentially being Kelce’s final season and Mahomes having already won three MVPs, voters might be more inclined to give the award to someone else.
Matt Horner: Jalen Hurts (+375)
How often is it that the two starting quarterbacks in the game aren’t listed as the back-to-back favorites in the market? RB Saqoun Barkley is right behind Patrick Mahomes for the MVP, leaving Hurts in third. With all the attention that is going to be paid to Barkley, I think Hurts could have a very good game here. Kansas City ranked just 18th against the pass this season, while ranking 8th against the run. Mind you, Hurts had a very good performance last week against Washington, who actually had the 3rd-ranked passing defense in the NFL. The Commanders were almost selling out to stop Barkley, which they still couldn’t, but also allowed Hurts to have a good day because of that. I think we are getting some great value here on Hurts to win the Super Bowl MVP as the starting QB of one of the teams.
