PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you were planning on just walking into SEPTA headquarters for a Senior Fare Card, you might want to reconsider.

SEPTA wants seniors to know that, while it's not required, it's strongly recommended they make an appointment to get their Senior Fare Cards, which allow people 65 and older to ride SEPTA for free.

The SEPTA website says appointments are strongly encouraged for seniors to bring in proof of age to apply for their card. The SEPTA Key website, though, mentions same day service without saying appointments are recommended.

One woman showed up at SEPTA headquarters without an appointment and was not able to get her card. She said she’d be coming back.

“I want to get my senior discount,” she said. “I want to get it for free. I’m a senior now. I want it!”

SEPTA Spokesman Andrew Busch says it is possible to get a card without an appointment, but there's no guarantee.

"We want to make sure that the messaging is consistent. So we do recommend that you call ahead, and if you come in same day, we're going to do our best to accommodate you."

He says if spots are open, walk-ins are given appointments for later in the day.

Busch added that the transit agency is going to review its messaging to be sure seniors seeking their cards aren't turned away.

"We want to get more people in and we're going to look at any language we have on the website that might need to be cleaned up and also get some signage in on the concourse."

Busch says SEPTA processes about 100 senior fare card applications each day.
