LISTEN NOW: Q with Tom Power - Melanie C + Aysanabee
While discussing her memoir The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl, Melanie C opened up about why “it’s nice to get your story out in your words,” after years of other people doing it for her.
From spotting an ad in the newspaper looking for “singer, dancer and street wise 18-24 year olds” to becoming an international sensation, Melanie’s life went from zero to Spice real quick. Now she's reminiscing about her Spice Girls days of writing songs with her bandmates, dealing with haters who called them “manufactured,” and promoting girl power in their own specific way.
Looking back now, Melanie feels beyond lucky to have been able to reach as many people as she has and be part of something so special. And while they might no longer be touring, Melanie insists “once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl,” and she isn’t interested in being referred to a “former member” of her girl group and sisterhood. “I am Sporty Spice, and Melanie C… and I’m all the things all the time.”
Also in the episode, singer-songwriter Aysanabee discusses his breakthrough album Watin and the significance of including the voice of his grandfather — a residential school survivor — in his music. To hear it all listen to the entire episode above.
