Like many of us, John Cooper from Skillet is at home, practicing social distancing as we work to flatten the curve and beat this pandemic. Also, like many of us, the frontman with the big voice and big beard is taking a hit during this time, with coronavirus concerns forcing the band to cancel shows, sidelining the Rock group indefinitely. But Cooper is keeping his head up, making the most of the situation by spending time with family and catching up on books and shows.
“I’m not glad this is happening and I’m not glad I’m home, because I’m supposed to be on the road doing gigs and meeting fans, and you know, getting paid. That’s how you get paid as a musician,” Cooper admits. “So I’m not happy it’s all happening, but I decided to make the most out of it. And in making the most of it, I get to hang out with my kids a bit more, my wife a bit more, sit around talking at the table a bit more. It’s actually been kinda nice.”
Cooper has been reading his way through his time at home and making sure he’s all caught up on Netflix. John’s not really a cook, but his wife, Skillet guitarist Korey Cooper, keeps serving up one of his favorite meals.
“Basically, she can put anything in eggs and make it taste good,” he smiles. “This is gonna be the redneck in me,” he chuckles reluctantly. “This is something I actually love, because I’m a little big redneck – sliced hot dogs in scrambled eggs is delicious.”
“Somebody’s going, ‘oh my gosh do you know what hot dogs are made of?’ Nobody does and it doesn’t even matter. They’re delicious, and they’re salty, and they’re wonderful.”
