Above The Rim Soundtrack Turns 25: A Review

Cover Image
25 years old!  The movie was good, but the soundtrack (in my opinion) is the best all-time.  The year was 1994, and Death Row Records ruled the urban music scene (don't tell Bad Boy Records that).  This soundtrack holds SO MANY memories for me.  So many in fact, its inspired me to do this rather lengthy blog about it.  So I appreciate you sharing your time reading this, and reminesing on a great album.

The cassette had 3 bonus tracks, including 'Pain' by 2Pac ---- https://t.co/soBnQre2uO

Remember, this is an era where cassettes are still outselling CDs.  And the 3 bonus tracks rewarded those 'old school' listeners.  The cassette listening experience basically forced you to enjoy every track on an album.  Today, people miss a ton of great tunes because of the technological ease of skipping/downloading singles.

Sisters With Voices were 2 years off their red hot single 'Weak', and this track kicked off the soundtrack with a smooth banger.  Thank you, CoCo!

I was too young to be "smoking a blunt and sippin' on a Heinaken", but that track was super smooth.

Low key, this was my favorite H-Town song of all-time.  I remember hearing it on the countdown shows on K104 while living in Dallas.  RIP Dino, gone way too soon.  Great production contribution by Davante Swing (of Jodeci).

Daz came out swinging on this one.  I was always a huge D-P-G fan, with Karrupt and Snoop chipping in lyrical gold.  My favorte part of the song - the poetical outro that I hastened to memorize.

Can’t lie. When @MarlonWayans said this in our interview about #AboveTheRim and the people Tupac was running with at the time in 1993-94, I got goosebumps. Full story: https://t.co/Yt6LRZX9uN pic.twitter.com/f421THf9qt

2nd II None were affiliated with DJ Quik, and turned in this raunchy, catchy, musical tune.

25 years ago today the greatest soundtrack of the 1990s, the greatest hip hop oriented soundtrack of all time, and my 3rd favorite album overall was released. This song was low-key a banger.

Easily the biggest single off the album.  Warren G was on the cusp of dropping his own debut album, and Nate Dogg was just another big feature away from being a household name.  God bless this track, its still in heavy rotation on Hot 959 today.

During the first read of the script for #AboveTheRim, Tupac walked right up to @justleon with a message. “You ain’t gonna have a problem with me because you in 'The Five Heartbeats.' That’s my movie.”Full story here: https://t.co/Yt6LRZX9uN pic.twitter.com/UeW1JTtZH5

The song during the credits at the end of the movie.  As EXCELLENT as this track was, it was just my 2nd favorite Pac song on the album (after 'Pain', which was only on the cassette).  He was 22 years old when he wrote this.  Musical genius.

The fire duet is a true gem.  Aaron "The Nasty Man" Hall was so underrated.  From his days with Guy, to his solo joints.  Jewell and Aaron's mature voices mesh perfectly.

The second most popular single off the ablum put The Lady of Rage in elite status.  This was possibly the most rhythmic-pop friendly track, with Uncle Snoop providing the chorus "rock on with your bad self".  She never reached her full potential aftewards.

My first recollections of someone being called a 'light skin'.  If you were a young lady in the early 90s, you probably had a crush on Al B. Sure.  His flasetto style in the joint made for a smooth R&B addition.

I always felt like this group sounded like Onyx.  Operation From The Bottom, with a crowd chant anthem for basketball season.

This was interesting. Now I want to celebrate #MarchMadness by watching #AboveTheRim again. I used to love this movie, but now I can analyze it ----Tupac's Birdie Is Still the Best Sports Villain https://t.co/AewVmLbJYZ

This uniquely funky track always stood out to me.  Likely not the most popular, but I liked it :)

Jodeci's Davante Swang made two production contributions.  'Part Time Lover' and this smooth track about 'not causing any trouble'.

What. A. Voice.  She was so taletned, they let her have 2 songs on the soundtrack (duet with Aaron Hall, and this one).  Have a piece of pie...pie too sweet, have a piece of meat.  Meat so tough.

The grittiest track on the album, and the second by The Dogg Pound.  I really thought Daz and Karrupt were amazing in their own rights.  Snoop Dogg not withstanding.

One of three bonus tracks available on the cassette version of the soundtrack.  And by far my single favorite Tupac Shakur song of all-time.
