Austin Resource Recovery has launched the final expansion of their curbside composting service for all their customers. It will include around 55,000 more households. It's a fantastic 1Thing to do that will help Austin reach it's Zero Waste Goal for 2040!

ARR curbside composting service tibits I learned:

The final service expansion would create around 207,000 single family households participating.
ARR would have done this last year, but due to COVID-19, put off the expansion until 2021 to have better safety measures in place.
Over 91,000 TONS of waste, turned into compost, has stayed out of the landfills. Big 1Thing Win!
ARR started the service with a $1 / month increase in 2016 when the expansions started.
Last year, in 2020, the ATX City Council approved a $2.60 / month increase.
ARR aims to provide a wide range of services while minimizing a rate impact on the customer.
Customers are able to offset fee increases by the choice of their trash cart size.
Post cards will be sent out to let customers know if their composting service starts February 8 or 16.
This program is part of the City of Austin’s zero waste goal to divert 90 percent of materials from landfills by 2040.

ARR Curbside Composting

The program collects food scraps, yard trimmings, food-soiled paper and natural fibers, and converts them into nutrient-rich compost. Because materials are processed in a commercial composting facility, extremely high temperatures are reached, allowing Austinites to compost items like meat, dairy, seafood and bones that typically cannot be composted in a backyard.
