Colossal Biosciences is the Dallas-based company that has been working for years to bring the woolly mammoth back from extinction.  They recently made news for creating a “woolly mouse.”

Well, Colossal Biosciences is back in the news, after researchers there claim they have resurrected another ancient creature from extinction: the dire wolf!

Colossal Biosciences says this is the world’s “first successfully de-extincted animal.”  According to CNN, the dire wolf died out some 12,500 years ago.

Ben Lamm, Colossal’s cofounder and CEO, said in a news release, “This massive milestone is the first of many coming examples demonstrating that our end-to-end de-extinction technology stack works.

“Our team took DNA from a 13,000 year old tooth and a 72,000 year old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies.”
