Dallas officials seek community help to turn 40 acres of Fair Park into year-round destination

The city of Dallas has a problem with Fair Park: for 11 months out of the year, the area sits pretty vacant with not a whole lot going on.

The State Fair is incredible, but that only lasts about four weeks. What can they do with the area for the rest of the year?

That’s the question city officials have posed to the community, who are seeking ideas to transform 40 acres of Fair Park currently occupied by parking lots 10, 11 and 12 into a year-round destination.

Dallas Park and Recreation Director John Jenkins told NBC DFW that more attractions are needed to make Fair Park a destination throughout the year.

This could be restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, anything that’s going to "to bring people out, 365 days a year," he said.

The groundbreaking of a new community park at Fair Park is slated to occur in December, with construction scheduled to continue throughout 2027.

Jenkins believes the upcoming community park and proposed redevelopment could help establish a more active future for Fair Park. "To me, that's what Fair Park should be about," he said.
