The Denton Fire Department is getting a new addition to the force, one that has never been seen before in the state of Texas.
Chief Kenneth Hedges told WFAA, that by the end of the year, the Denton Fire Department will be responding to emergency calls with an electric fire truck.
Hedges explained, "I think it's going to be significant because I think it's going to be the direction of the fire service."
The truck won't look any different from any other truck, except for its power source, a 246-kWh battery. And the truck will be much safer for firefighters, as it eliminates exposure to harmful diesel exhaust.
While Denton will be the first fire department in Texas to have an electric truck, departments in Madison, Wis., Calgary, Canada, and Portland, Ore. already have them on the streets.
The "Volterra" is expected to be delivered to the city of Denton October 23.
