When the fish are biting, you know it’s going to be a good day. How are you supposed to feel when the fish are biting a little harder than you’re used to?

While fishing at Eugene McCray at Lake Arlington, Mark Everett felt what he thought was a catfish catch his line. Turns out, it was something a little bigger.

Everett had actually reeled in an alligator.

He told WFAA, “It was an unreal experience… It was really, really weird. I was on the side of the boat like this, and I pulled it on up — and it was a dang alligator.”

Unfortunately for Everett, he found himself in a little hot water with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for not releasing the gator immediately.

If an alligator is caught accidentally I’s not illegal if you let it go right after snagging it. Everett evidently kept the animal out of the water for a couple of hours and fed it, posing for pictures with it, and encouraging others to take pictures as well.

Everett was cited for Illegal possession of an alligator, intentional feeding of a free-ranging alligator, and not having a hunter’s education certificate. He also received a warning for hunting without a license.
