Rush hour appears to be an all-day affair when you’re driving around North Texas. No matter what day of the week or what time you venture out of your home, you’re going to wind up in traffic.
A new study from the Texas A&M University Transportation Institute found that DFW drivers spent an average of 69 hours sitting in traffic 69 hours last year, up 4% from the previous year.
North Texans spent more time in traffic than the average American.
David Schrank, TTI senior research scientist and lead author of the study, said in a press release, “The numbers show more traffic than we’ve ever seen, but also a different kind of traffic.
“Hybrid work capabilities, online shopping and other changes in our daily lives have reshaped when and where congestion happens. This can create more unpredictability and make travel harder to plan.
All of this time sitting in traffic comes at a cost, too.
Per WFAA, congestion cost DFW drivers $6.4 billion last year, with the average commuter losing $1,618, or 21 gallons, in fuel because of sitting in traffic.
